Why a Startical?

Why a Startical?

The objective of a Startical is to promote healthier entrepreneurship: mentally, physically and emotionally.

The term Startical is a mash-up of startup and sabbatical.  It was coined in 2014 when I co-developed and prototyped the concept, combining introspection and travel over the course of the month of December.

To commemorate the 5-year anniversary of Startical 1.0, I've decided to iterate on the concept, hence this Startical 2.0 blog.  The timing is not merely symbolic: this past year my entrepreneur friends and I have seen firsthand an alarming number of colleagues and acquaintances burn out, break down, or worse.  And I have been precipitously close myself on numerous occasions.

As of now (2019), I will have spent over fifteen consecutive years in startups, half of which have been spent at the helm of reelyActive, the first startup I co-founded myself.  As I noted in Why a Startical 1.0, I'm easily labelled as "Jeff from reelyActive".  But is that really (reely?) who I am?  Or who others expect me to be?  Or who I expect myself to be?

Yes, it's time for Startical 2.0.  No epic overland trip this time, just the tried-and-tested guidelines with a minor addition.  Thanks for reading and I hope you find a positive take-away from this endeavour, no matter how small or seemingly inconsequential.  I've found that the most profound impact is often more about timing than substance.

Evolutionary Purpose

Will and I discussed finding the balance of progress and purpose in organisations (startups and otherwise) which reminded me of the book Reinventing Organizations by Frédéric Laloux which was recommended to me by one of my mentors.  We found the clip above on YouTube (if you're not familiar with Laloux, it's a nice short summary of his work) and one element stood out for me: what he called Evolutionary Purpose . How I understand this concept is that the purpose (or soul) of an organisation evolves over time, rather than an individual or leadership team directing towards a specific outcome.  It's very much in line with the sailboat analogy and the lunch discussion I had with the team. It is very reassuring to me that the people closest to me today all affirmed my feelings on leadership, and interesting that it often took very different paths/context for us to be able to truly connect on the subject.
